One of my favorite things to do as a blogger/sewist is showcase a new fabric collection. When I get invited to do this, I try to think of a project that will be unique AND keep the fabric in the spotlight. For the “Trish and Birdie” blog hop by Sweet Bee Designs, I decided to make a scripture tote full of pockets and adorned with a cute little appliqué girl. I am giddy at how this project turned out. Supplies needed for the TOTE:
- Medium Interfacing
- Heavy stabilizer
- It’s So Easy by Simplicity Pattern #A8081 (bought mine for $2 at Walmart)
To make the tote, simply follow the pattern instructions. It’s seriously very very simple.
NOTE: The appliqué has to be done before you assemble the tote. I cut all the pattern pieces for the tote and applied all the interfacing before working on the appliqué pieces.
Supplies for the appliqué:
- Drawing or sketch
- Fabric pieces
- Heat and Bond
- hot iron
- small sharp scissors
I saw this little girl stamp by Julie Nutting on Amazon a couple of weeks ago and thought it would be the perfect appliqué project. She just looks so sweet and I loved the simplicity of her. I printed the photo of the stamp and cut it into smaller pieces.I gathered some scrap pieces of “Trish and Birdie” and applied heat and bond to the back side.
Next, I flipped the pieces of the little girl stamp over and traced them onto the back of the heat and bonded fabric pieces.Once I cut out the individual pieces of fabric, I removed the paper from the heat and bond and ironed each one into place on the front piece of the tote.
I stitched around each fabric piece with matching thread. You can do this with the free motion foot or carefully use the factory setting and universal foot.
Once the little girl appliqué was complete, I couldn’t wait to get the entire tote assembled and ready to use.
This whole project from start to finish took me 2 hours. Either it’s just a simple project or I was really eager to complete it.
I want to give a huge shout out to Deane at Sweet Bee Designs for inviting me to be apart of this blog tour.
