Some of my favorite things about crafting and DIY projects is watching old things become new. Recently, I bought a gently used cork board at a local thrift store with a makeover project in mind.
My ten year old daughter wants a corkboard for her school reminders, art, and photos. When we were at the thrift store we say the perfect size board to hang above her bed, but it was pretty tattered. The cork board had scratches and pens marks all over and the frame was chipped. Of course we bought it with a DIY-plan in mind.
Glitter Mod Podge
Burlap (from BurlapFabric.com)
First, I painted the dinged up black frame with a fresh coat of black paint. Just adding that bit of black paint made this old corkboard look so much better.
Next I had to cover that marked up old cork. So I took some left over burlap from the Photo Backdrop I made last month and cut it with an X-acto knife; this makes the edges more raw and less perfect. I stapled the burlap to the cork at each corner and then lathered on the glittery Mod Podge. The Mod Podge not only secures it to the corkboard, but it makes it look super girly with all that glitter.
My cute daughter found some Fairy Tale stencils in my craft stash. Once the Mod Podge dried, she stenciled “Once Upon a Time…” on the bottom of the board. We added ribbon above the cute little saying to make it more girl. (We are all upon the girly stuff in this house.)
I bought some wooden push pins and we adorned them with some adhesive gems for a finishing touch. My daughter grabbed the family picture from her room and immediately pinned it in “the perfect spot.” She plans to put pictures of her goals and pictures she draws on it, kind of like her very own vision board.
We hung it above her bed because she wants to see it everyday and be reminded of her goals for the year.
Now to put something BIG on the adjacent wall.! 🙂
Shout out the BurlapFabric.com for providing the burlap for this project and being such a great company to work with. Please check them out; they are so much more than burlap.
